It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
