It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
