It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
