college internship resume template
It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
