It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
