It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
