It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
