It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
