It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .

As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.

So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.

For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.

With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.

Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.

On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.

It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.

I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
