It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
