It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
