It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
