It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
