It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
