It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
