It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
