It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
