It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
