It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
