It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
