It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
