It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
