It may look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
