It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
