It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
