It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
