It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
