cover letter resume template
It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
