It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
