It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
