It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
