cover letter template word
It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
