It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
