It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
