It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
