It may look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
