It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
