It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
