It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
