customizable calendar template 2019
It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
