It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
