It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
