It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
