It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
