It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
