It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
