It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
