It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
