It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
