It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
